A Stroll Through Tokyo

11.08.16

Today we fulfilled my brothers wish and went to Mr. Doughnut for breakfast. After that we visited the Edo Museum in Tokyo. The exhibition consisted of a replica of the old Edo Town and illustrations of old Japanese traditions. It took us though the history of Edo and how it changed from the Shogun leadership to a westernized culture (up to the post-war period).

After a long nap we decided to go on a Boat tour along the Sumida river. The Boat was not a touristic cruise boat, but a water taxi, which is commonly used by the locals. The Taxi took us to the Hama Rikyu park. There we took a stroll along the lake in the sun and then sat in a traditional tea house and drank cold Macha tea. Although sitting on the floor looks easy, it is difficult to kneel for a certain amount of time. Outside, the large contrast between Japanese nature and the surrounding sky scrapers seemed striking to me; showing the differences between modern and ancient Japan. Along with the tea, typical Japanese sweets (Mochi) were served (many of which contain bean paste inside).

Following this particular refreshment, we decided to go to the main street in Tokyo (Ginza), resembling the Fifth Avenue in New York. There we saw many posh Japanese shops and ate hakigori. Hakigori could be compared to a snow cone (crushed ice covered with syrup) and is a Hiroshima specialty. When well prepared, the ice should have the consistency of snow.  The street was closed off for cars and enabled pedestrians to stroll down the street. We felt glad to be able to enjoy the sunny day in the center of Tokyo.
