Tokyo Skytree

10.08.16

Today we started to feel our jet lag at around five AM. As the sun sets early in Japan (at around 8 pm), it felt like the afternoon sun was shining into our window. Due to the early morning hours, we could not find a single breakfast place in our area and went to the nearest “family mart”. There we managed to get coffee and Japanese pastry. At around 8:30 AM we finally went to “Tokyo Skytree”. This can be compared to the Fernsehturm in Berlin. After a magnificent elevator ride (at the speed of 250m per minute), we were able to enjoy a panorama view of the misty Tokyo. On very clear days (especially in winter) it is possible to see the Fuji mountain; in Summer however, it is usually covered by a cloud of fog. In Skytree cafĂ© we ate blueberry vinegar ice-cream and green tea.

Since my birthday gift for this year was a new saxophone, we went and looked for a saxophone shop. Luckily our Japanese friend managed to reserve a practice room within such a shop and I got to try out many saxophones of different brands and materials. Finally I decided to settle for a second-hand Yanagisawa Saxophone to bring back home to Brussels. My Brother then too was looking for something of his own. We looked for a magic shop in the other part of town, which turned out to be a big shopping mall with all sorts of gadgets and goods to buy. Of course, to us, Japanese shops aren’t simply shops, they are arenas for new things to explore. Seldom one would come across an item that is also sold in Europe.

In the evening we went to eat in a street full of restaurant stands and gave us the opportunity to eat outside (which is unusual for Japan). It was a small street around the Sensoii Temple. After dinner, we went to the temple and were able to make a wish. The rule was to through a 5¥ piece into a large box and make a wish. Then the person had to bow several times, clasp their hands together and then go back down the stairs fir the wish to come true.
